7. A character you feel the need to defend
Gale Hawthorne. He could be the masculine form of Katniss. He lost a parent too, because of the Capitol, he was forced to take his father’s place and help his mother keeping his brothers alive, though the situation of the people was miserable. All because of the Capitol. He and Katniss were bond by the will of survival, they helped each other survive. That is more than love. That is the knowledge that someone helped you when no one else could, without asking for anything instead. That is the hope of making a better life for their families, together. Because no matter what, they would always come back to each other. So much hatred and anger collected in many years made Gale seem arrogant and selfish and cruel, but that was just the hope of justice, not only for him, but for everyone the Capitol was treating bad. He designed that bomb thinking he could have saved the Panem, the rebels, not that he would kill innocent children. Who is responsible for that? It’s simple: Coin! Just think of any other time Gale helped Prim, when Katniss was in the games, twice. He helped some of the District 12 people when their houses were burnt to ashes. Gale is one of the most complex characters, all his qualities turned into flaws because of anger… I just want to thank S.C. for creating such character.
